Matthijs de Ligt has refused to rule out the possibility of staying at Ajax beyond this summer’s transfer window.
The 19-year-old’s potential departure from Amsterdam has become a proper transfer saga by now. He’s been tipped most heavily to follow in the footsteps of midfielder Frenkie de Jong and move to Barcelona, but no deal has been struck yet. The reason for that is simple enough – he is yet to decide where he wants to ply his trade next season.
Apart from Barcelona, Manchester United, Liverpool, Juventus and Bayern Munich have also been linked. The two English clubs have, however, reportedly dropped all interest.
But whatever the truth of the matter may be, the Ajax captain staying put is still a real possibility. He has revealed that there is no “dream move” away from Ajax. His only dream of that sort was to play for the Dutch champions, and he has already fulfilled it. He is still under contract with them and he may yet choose not to break it.
