De Rossi: I rejected numerous offers to stay at Roma

Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi has decided to explain why he needed so much time to agree to a contract extension at Olimpico.

The Serie A giants yesterday confirmed that the Italian international had signed a new five-year deal until 2017.

The experienced midfielder will be earning €5.5 million per campaign under the terms of his new contract, which made him one of the highest paid players at the club.

De Rossi’s previous deal was set to expire at the end of the season, and at one point in time it looked as though he would not be extending his stay at Olimpico.

However, the player eventually signed a new long-term deal after the long-drawn negotiations with club chiefs.

“The obstacle was always my wages and we discussed that element a lot,” De Rossi stated at a press conference on Monday. “I only asked for one figure from the very first day.

“I’m really happy here, I’ve taken the decision that I have always wanted. At one stage I didn’t feel loved on a professional level.

“I wasn’t seen as a strong player and I was also responsible for that. I need to stay here if I am wanted, especially in my home.”

De Rossi admits he was tempted by numerous offers from big European clubs.

“There was also a moment when I was attracted by the idea of seeing myself on a new stage and playing against the best for the most important trophies.

“I don’t think it is a secret that I spoke to other clubs, a few chats did take place. I wanted to see how good I was at certain levels. I’ll try to do that here.”

De Rossi started his professional career at Roma and has since made 268 Serie A appearances, scoring 32 goals in the process.
