De Vrij to rescue Liverpool defence

If Liverpool throw money at enough Dutch defenders one of them will surely remedy their comical defensive problems, right?Stefan De Vrij is the latest solution to the Reds’ woes, and the Lazio defender could make the switch to Anfield in January, according to Italian newspaper Il Tempo.

The central defender reportedly has a release clause of £40m, which Liverpool are willing to pay, and the player has refused to sign a new contract in the midst of these transfer rumours. Jurgen Klopp had targeted De Vrij’s international teammate Virgil van Dijk in the summer, but a deal never materialised for the Southampton man.

De Vrij has racked up 33 caps for the Dutch national side, as well as 79 appearances for Lazio in three seasons at the Italian club, and has the defensive experience to improve Liverpool’s shaky defence. The Reds have conceded 12 goals in seven Premier League games this season, and something needs to change if Klopp’s side want to become genuine title contenders.
