With the Championship taking center stage this weekend, we have a string of interesting affairs from across England’s footballing tiers. So, for those of you looking to stick on a Saturday acca, we have found a handful of helpful tips that are worth keeping an eye out for.
Saturday December 17th
BST 15:00 Barnsley vs Burton
Although Barnsley might have lost their Championship status last season, Saturday’s hosts have an immediate second-tier return at the top of their agenda this time around. Last seen on December 2nd as they laid down another League One marker thanks to an eye-catching 2-1 win away at Peterborough, the Tykes are enjoying what has been an extended purple patch. Along with cruising their way to a 3-0 romp against Crewe last month while on FA Cup duties, Michael Duff’s men have now won six of their last seven contests across all competitions. Battling it out at the top of the table and tipped by many as a leading promotion contender, the former Cheltenham boss has also seen his side continue to shine on home soil this season. Including a 3-1 victory against MK Dons on November 19th, it should be noted that Barnsley have won each of their previous three showdowns at Oakwell by an aggregate score of 8-1. On the flip side, although Burton might have now played out a stalemate in each of their last four League One matchups, Saturday’s guests are firmly at the heart of a relegation scrap. Opening this weekend’s fixtures sat four points adrift of safety, the Yellows have also won just one of their previous 10 third-tier outings. Two sides who find themselves battling it out at opposite ends of the standings, we’re backing a home victory for a high-flying Barnsley on Saturday afternoon.
Tip: Barnsley win & Over 1.5 goals @ 27/20
15:00 Leyton Orient vs Sutton
While Leyton Orient might have endured somewhat of a wobble when opening November, Saturday’s hosts have come roaring back. Last seen on December 3rd as they breezed their way to a thumping 3-0 romp against Bradford on home soil, Richie Wellens’ side have continued to gain a string of plaudits from across League Two this season. Although the Reds might have had to settle for another bottom-half finish during the 2021/22 campaign, the former Salford boss has a shock third-tier return at the top of his agenda this time around. Making their return to action this weekend holding a commanding four-point buffer at the top of the table, Orient are riding quite the wave of momentum. Now winning each of their last three League Two appearances on the spin, it should also be highlighted that Wellens’ men have won six of their last eight matchups across all formats. Continuing to gain a reputation for their clinical displays in the final third, Orient will be desperate to extend their buffer over the chasing pack here. On the flip side, while Sutton might have claimed a welcomed 1-0 win at home against relegation scrappers Colchester last weekend, Saturday’s guests will know that they face a real task at Brisbane Road. Almost sat in League Two limbo as we inch closer to 2023, Matt Gray’s side have recorded just a pair of victories from any of their last nine appearances. Likewise, with just a single away win to their name so far this season, we’re backing a home victory.
Tip: Leyton Orient win @ 19/20
15:15 Mirandes vs Ponferradina
While Mirandes might still find themselves looking over their shoulder at the drop zone, Saturday’s hosts are enjoying what has been a hugely impressive flurry over recent times. Last seen picking up what could turn out to be a crucial 2-1 victory away at Racing Santander, Joseba Etxeberria’s men have come skyrocketing up the Segunda standings. On a run that is highlighted by an action-packed 4-2 victory against Albacete on December 3rd, Los Rojillos have remarkably lost just one of their previous 10 straight matchups across all formats. With that eye-catching flurry stemming all the way back to the middle of October, Mirandes have also continued to shine with their stellar displays on home soil. Including a shock 2-1 victory against play-off contenders Cartagena last month, it should be noted that Saturday’s hosts have won each of their last three Segunda contests at the Estadio Municipal de Anduva by an aggregate score of 7-3. Likewise, with just a single defeat in front of their own supporters since way back on August 27th, Etxeberria’s side should be smelling another golden chance here. Although Ponferradina might have been last seen picking up a much-needed 1-0 victory at home against fellow relegation scrappers Lugo, David Gallego’s men hold just a three-point buffer over the drop zone. Failing to win any of their previous eight consecutive showdowns away from the Estadio El Toralín, they were also hit with a 3-1 defeat when they last made the trip to Mirandes back in March.
