English forward Jermain Defoe has made it clear that he is not giving up on the place in England squad ahead of the 2014 World Cup.
The 31-year-old is set to join Toronto FC at the end of the month, but he doesn’t think that a move to the MLS will hinder his chances of making the plane to Brazil.
“I have to be honest, I did think about the chances of going to the World Cup,” Defoe said at a press conference.
“Having played in a World Cup before it is just the greatest thing in the world, it is a dream come true, that is why you play football, to play in a major tournament and at that level.
“To get into any World Cup or European Championship squad for your country, it is based on merit, which means you have to play well, be fit and ready. Hopefully I can be on the plane.”
Despite seeing little playing time at club level, Defoe has started four 2014 World Cup qualifiers, scoring 3 goals in the process.
He was called for the November friendlies against Chile and Germany, which is enough to suggest he is still in Roy Hodgson’s plans.
With that in mind, you should know Defoe is no less than 7/2 to make England World Cup squad, with his chances having increased now that Theo Walcott has been ruled out of the tournament.
