Jermain Defoe is closing in on a free transfer to Bournemouth, according to the Telegraph.
The thirty-four year old sat out as his Sunderland side lost to champions Chelsea in Sunday’s final round of Premier League fixtures, and can now leave the club on a free transfer following their relegation.
Defoe had a loan spell with the Cherries early on in his career when he scored nineteen goals in thirty-one appearances – a haul which included a run of scoring in ten successive matches.
Another of the thirty-four year old’s former clubs West Ham United made an approach to secure his services back in January but have decided not to reignite their interest.
Defoe scored fifteen goals for the Black Cats during the recently concluded campaign, just as he did last season leaving his all time Premier League tally at one hundred and fifty-eight.
The only active player who has netted more in Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney who is second but still some way behind Alan Shearer.
