Defoe set for Sunderland switch

The Mirror understand that Sunderland are set to win the race to sign Jermain Defoe after making the former Tottenham Hotspur man “an offer to good to turn down”.

The 32 year old had been linked with no less than ten Premier League clubs in recent weeks, with Hull City, Stoke City and Queens Park Rangers some of the names also interested in securing his services.

Defoe moved to MLS side Toronto FC last February, and scored twelve goals in seventeen appearances for the club but is ready to return to England less than twelve months after leaving.

He has been training with Spurs to get to match fitness, and would be a welcome addition to a Sunderland side who have scored just eighteen goals in twenty-one league games so far this season.

Gus Poyet’s side travel to Tottenham on Saturday afternoon where they can be backed at 5/1 to take all three points.
