Veteran forward Alessandro Del Piero has explained why he rejected an offer from Liverpool in the summer.
The 37-year-old decided to leave Juventus when his contract expired at the end of last season and spent next few months searching for a new club.
Del Piero ultimately accepted an offer from A-League side Sydney FC, but not after rejecting an approach from Liverpool.
The Reds attempted to sign the Italian forward after the end of the summer transfer window, but the player opted against joining the Premier League side.
“The negotiations with Sydney were at an advanced stage and then I thought about what had happened at Heysel,” Del Piero explained to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Juventus and Liverpool have been able to reconstruct their relationship, but for many people that tragedy is an indelible memory.”
The former Italy international surprised everyone when he decided to leave Juventus after 19 first team seasons at the club and everything suggests he will end his playing career in Australia.
During his time in Turin, Del Piero has scored 208 goals in 513 Serie A appearances, winning six league titles in the process.
