Danish international winger Dennis Rommedahl signed a two-year contract to play for Olympiakos Piraeus, the Greek first division club announced on Wednesday.

The Dane, who played for Dutch side Ajax last season, was out of contract. Olympiakos have not released full details of the deal but local media reports that he will be earning a yearly salary of 850,000 euros plus bonuses.

“I know we must become champions once again and that’s why I came,” Rommedahl said. “I know that it is the biggest club in Greece. I had other offers but my manager said the most serious was from Olympiakos.”

Olympiakos had previously tried to attract Rommedahl three years ago when he left English outfit Charlton Athletic but on that occasion he opted for Ajax.

He played for Denmark at the World Cup in South Africa, scoring against Cameroon, and has made 99 appearances for the national team.

Rommedahl, who began his career with Danish club Lyngby before heading to PSV Eindhoven in 1997, will take over from Luciano Galletti who is struggling with a long-running kidney ailment.

Olympiakos finished second behind arch-rivals Panathinaikos last season before missing out to PAOK Salonika in the end of season play-offs for Greece’s second Champions League place.
