New Marseille coach Didier Deschamps says his ambition is to become French champions next season.

Marseille, who finished second to Bordeaux last season, are now being headed by the man who lifted the European Cup as the club captain in 1993, when Belgian coach Erik Gerets left the club at the end of his contract.

“The ambition is to finish one place better than last season,” said the former Monaco and Juventus coach.

“When you’re at Marseille it’s to fight for first place, but we are not alone in this ambition. There’s also Bordeaux, Lyon, PSG and other teams.”

Marseille have yet to make a major summer signing but they should have more funds at their disposal with France striker Djibril Cissé expected to complete his move to Greek club Panathinaikos on Friday.
