Roberto Di Matteo insists he will have ‘no problem’ if winning the Champions League failed to earn him the Chelsea manager’s job full-time.
Caretaker boss Di Matteo said he is still unsure whether club owner Roman Abramovich will keep him on beyond the end of the season after Sunday’s Premier League win over Blackburn Rovers.
The 2-1 victory at Stamford Bridge could be Di Matteo’s final home game at the helm and the Italian conceded their were no guarantees that he would be coaching next season despite a successful short spell in the managerial hot-seat.
Asked if he thought the outcome of Saturday’s Champions League final with Bayern Munich would determine whether he was at the club next season, Di Matteo said: “I don’t think so, no, but I have no problem with it.”
Reflecting time in charge of the Blues since taking over from sacked predecessor Andre Villas-Boas earlier this year, Di Matteo said it had been a rollercoaster journey for him and his players.
“We’ve had a very intense nine weeks here together and it’s been fantastic.
“And we are all looking forward to next Saturday as well.
“It’s been very emotional because I feel very responsible with this club because I’ve played here, I’ve been part of it.
“So, it’s been a nice day.”
Blackburn manager Steve Kean said he was still determined to lead the club despite their relegation to the Championship being confirmed last week.
Kean is due to meet with the club’s owners next week, but refused to discuss his future after his side’s turbulent season ended with another defeat.
“Over the course of the season there has been a lot of speculation that has been way off the mark, some that’s been spot on,” Kean said when asked about his future.
“We need to keep our business close. We will be speaking about that face-to-face. I think that’s the best way to discuss it.”
“We also have to try and fight for the players we have because, no doubt, other clubs will be swarming around and try and take them.”
“That’s the first part of the rebuild – making sure you keep the squad together.”
