Di Stefano unfazed by Champions League draw

Alfredo Di Stefano says he was completely unconcerned about who Real Madrid would face in the Champions League semi-finals.

The Argentina-born forward, now an honourary president at Real, scored 418 goals in 510 official games at the club and was named Ballon d’Or winner in both 1957 and 1959.

After being discharged from La Fe hospital in Valencia following a regular check-up for a heart condition, the 86-year-old reacted to being told of Madrid’s semi-final opponents – Borussia Dortmund.

“I didn’t know who we’d been drawn against, but I’m happy enough with Borussia,” he told Marca.

“But I’m not playing,” he continued, before adding that this meant he did not particularly care who the Spanish giants had to play.

“Some Real Madrid fans wanted Barcelona, but not all of them.”

Di Stefano, who was part of a Real Madrid team who recorded five consecutive European Cup triumphs between the 1955-56 and 1959-60 seasons, also backed Jose Mourinho to remain at the club.

“I hope he stays,” he said when asked about the Portuguese coach’s future.
