Amad Diallo has pledged to “come back stronger than ever” after the Manchester United winger suffered an ankle injury that is expected to end his season.

On Saturday, reports emerged that Diallo had suffered an ankle ligament injury in training, with the severity of the issue likely to end his campaign.

The 22-year-old has been one of the major beneficiaries of Ruben Amorim’s arrival at United last November, emerging as a key player under the former Sporting CP head coach.

Diallo has scored nine goals and added seven assists in all competitions this season, including a memorable late goal to beat neighbours Manchester City in December.

The Ivory Coast international, who signed a new five-year contract only last month, confirmed the news of his injury on social media on Saturday.

“Extremely disappointed to be writing this message in such a crucial time of the season,” he wrote on Instagram. “Unfortunately, I will be out for some time with an injury.

“I will come back stronger than ever! Time to support the boys from the outside. Still loads to play for.”

Diallo joins the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Mason Mount and Kobbie Mainoo – who is expected to miss around a month – on United’s lengthy injury list.

United visit Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday, having only earned 14 points in 13 league matches under Amorim.

Only five sides have taken fewer points during that span, while Amorim is just the fourth coach to have lost seven or more of his first 13 top-flight games in charge of United.

The others to do so were AH Albut, Jimmy Murphy (both seven defeats) and John Chapman (10).
