Dick Advocaat is likely to succeed the recently sacked René Vandereycken at the Belgian national team. The Dutch manager announced to have chosen this task over the possibility of staying at Zenit St Petersburg.
Nothing has been agreed on yet, but Advocaat mentioned that a final decision will be made near the end of the month.
“If it was for the money, I should stay here. With Belgium, money plays no role because it’s almost nothing, especially in comparison with Zenit. But that’s not why I’m doing this,” Advocaat told Belgian television channel VRT.
“I do want to finish this season with Zenit. I want to win the championship and do well in the Europa League until December. Then I’d be happy.”
Belgium’s chances of making it to the next World Cup are slim after two defeats to Bosnia-Herzegovina in qualifiers in March and April. If Advocaat is to join the Red Devils, it will most probably be in an attempt to lead them to the European Championships of 2012.
