Did Messi deserve Fifa Ballon d’Or award?

Lionel Messi has claimed the Fifa Ballon d’Or award ahead of his Barcelona teammates Xavi and Andres Iniesta.

The Argentinian ace has long been touted as the world’s best player and this award just enhances his reputation in the world game.

Superstar

He is surely the most gifted footballer of his generation and at just 23 years of age too.

He is without doubt one of the most humble superstars that has ever graced a football field. He now has to be ranked alongside the likes of Pele and Diego Maradona as the best to ever play the game.

Acclaim

The award is voted for by journalists, national team bosses and captain of national sides. It shows how highly he is rated by the football community as a whole. I’m sure if the award was voted for by the fans that result would have probably been the same.

Unlucky

He claimed the award ahead of playmaker Andres Iniesta and midfield general Xavi. Both can consider themselves highly unlucky not to have won the award. Any of the three would have been worthy winners.

Xavi has been a fantastic performer for Barcelona for over a decade. And he was also the heartbeat of the Spanish side which won the World Cup in South Africa this summer. His vision and passing has been a vital part of Barca’s fantastic performances in the last few years.

Barcelona are not the same team without the midfielder in the side. At 30 years-of age it’s probably the last chance he will get to win the award. It would have been a fitting acknowledgement to a glorious career. The home-grown hero has been the unsung hero of the Barca team for a decade and deserved to be in the last three.

Midfield playmaker Andres Iniesta is probably seen as a more flamboyant player than Xavi but both have their roles in both the Spanish and Barca teams. Iniesta was also a key part of the World Cup winning team, scoring the winning goal in the final against Holland.

Iniesta is a true Barcelona player through and through. He came through at La Masia just Xavi and just like his Barca teammates is calm and composed on the ball with superb control.

He is also a scorer of vital goals. He is seen as Xavi’s partner in crime in the Barcelona midfield. Iniesta will no doubt get another crack at the award but will have to perform miracles to beat his Barca teammate Messi to the award in future years though.

Brilliant

Despite Xavi and Iniesta’s best efforts you can’t take anything away from the little Argentinian star. He scored an incredible 60 goals for club and country in 2010 and probably created the same amount of chances for his teammates.

Barcelona

It is a testament to Barcelona that the top three players nominated for the prestigious Ballon d’Or came through the clubs youth academy at La Masia.

It’s the Barcelona way of bringing through top players from their youth system into the first team. Barcelona has a particular way of doing things and it’s now become the envy of every top football club in the world.

The Barcelona way has become the best way in recent years and you can’t really argue with a system that has produced so many top players in the last decade.

Future

It’s incredible to think that Messi is just 23 years-old. He is likely to be challenging for this award for years to come. There will be few players good enough or determined enough to challenge the Argentinian international for future awards.

Did Messi deserve to win the Fifa Ballon d-Or?

well,in my contribution,i felt so bitter when messi was awarded the ballon d’or cos i saw nothing in wat he played during the world cup.in respect to the teams contribution,i feel messi has done very well for barca but at the national level HE’S A TRASH.INIESTA deserved that title because scoring a winning goal is not a CUP OF TEA. XAVI is another important icon or player that was to be awarded but he was’nt.IT’S A BIG SHAME TO FIFA AND ALL THE BLOODY JOURNALISTS

Who is still ready to argue about Messi’s incredible accompliments? He really deserved and deserves again the award. Yes, I respect Xavi’s and Iniesta’s performances. But they are nowhere close to that of Lionel Messi’s with his criminal dribblings and frozen goals that turn off his opponents.

  • Maimo

Xavi or Iniesta where better placed. Messi’s winning was unfair to these other players. They were at top form at all competitions they played World cup, Champions League and European Cup

Messi is just the Man, even though Xavi and Iniesta also deserve the Award, but Messi surpasses them at Goals and Goals creator. thats why Messi is really the man.

i meant xavi can pass very well and no 1 can beat him ay that. but messi is all in 1.the journalists and others made a ryt decesion.

i think this will definitely given to wesley sneidjer, last year he is outstanding.he won the italian serie a,italian cup, champion league with best player award, world cup runner up with five goals, fifa world club champion.but messi win only a la liga title and he is a big flop in world cup also, xavi is also deserve this award .,he won worldcup with otstanding performance and also won the la liga title, but surely not at all messi…,he should give that award to sneidjer or xavi……….

Yeah because they are really good and really barca haven’t bought that many people most of their players have come up through their youth system, but now we are off topic from this article so i say we end this here.

  • Ryan

    0 0

yeaaa i know but im using rooney as an example coz like ozil, muller, klose they were in the nominations so thats why i think it was kinda based on the WC, na i dont think it is worse its just not as tough or hard, loads of commentators and sky representatives have said that, yeaa i do think barca and real are better than man u, but thats coz everyone wants to go there

  • Thabo Caves

    0 0

Okay sure, but again you compare rooney to messi and messi had 8 more goals and 3 more assists throughout the 2009/2010 season and really i don’t think la liga is worse than the premier league why is it better. both barca and real are better than man u who is at the top of the premier league standings

  • Ryan

    0 0

noo lol i didnt you in general i mean like if you do compare them…yea they do play for brilliant teams international n club but they both make the team good, both xavi and iniesta made the most passes in the WC which made it easier for spain. but argentina has a really good team too but need to sort their defence out most their best players are strikers. and i agree with you with the sneijder thing, but you can tell its got nothing to do with their season for instance Rooney didn’t even get into the nominations because he had a dreadful WC, but he had a brilliant season, the premier league is a harder league than La Liga

  • Thabo Caves

    0 0

Why do people look at the world cup and throw everything else someone has done out the window. And that 30 shots no goals is just something that people bring up when they cant argue that thorough the whole season, and guess what the world player of the year voted on by people looking at a players whole year not just the world cup, messi was better than anyone else can think of.

  • Thabo Caves

    0 0

Im not comparing him to giggs you are. so you are saying messi should not win world player of the year then who should. xavi and iniesta always play with a world class team whether its spain or barca messi does not with argentina. Their coach is bad and team around him is not as good as spains. and again you have to look at the stats. why are you guys picking player who have not scored as many goals as messi and assisted as many people as he has. I dont understand the arguments you make when you talk about “carrying the team”. The world player of the year does not have to carry the team whatever that means he just has put up better numbers than anyone else. And sniedjer only scored only scored 43 goals and 12 assists while messi scored 58 goals and had 11 assists during the 2009/2010 season so why does snjedier deserve to beat messi when messi clearly has the better stats.

  • Ryan

    0 0

Messi – 30 shots no goal

  • gideon

    0 0

i think messi paid the officials of fifa, because he does nt decieve it.i think snieder should have been the one.messi did not score even a single goal during the world cup.

  • Ryan

    0 0

Yes but my point is Giggs influences the team, and if your comparing Giggs to Messi, Messi is going to win as the best player in the world and he should be influencing his team what ever team they are playing against, what I am saying is that Messi needs Xavi and Iniesta to influence him and thats why I wouldn’t class him as Player of the year

  • Thabo Caves

    0 0

Giggs was playing against blackpool not germany there is a little difference and we are comparing messi to xavi and iniesta who do not have to carry their team because their team is spain who had way better players and a way better coach. this all leads to messi being the best player in the world

  • Ryan

    0 0

if your talking about Argentina playing crap in WC , you can’t say it’s the teams fault why messi didn’t score, because fact is Argentina didn’t play crap they played good up until Germany game, and if you think they did play crap shouldn’t he be inspiring them to play good? as the best player in the world he should, Ryan Giggs came on for Man Utd after they were 2-0 down against Blackpool, and he inspired his team to win by setting up 2 of their 3 goals

  • Thabo Caves

By the way messi has 14 assists in the league xavi 4 thats laughable and with 17 goals and xavis 3 goals its not really close is it.

  • Thabo Caves

    0 0

Messi deserves this award hands down. He scored 60 goals Sneidjer xavi and iniesta did not do that and you have you have value goals over assists and messi assists just as well as the xavi look at the stats . And his performances at the world cup were bad because of his coach. Maradona is a terrible coach and doesn’t know what hes doing. With a semi-compotent coach Messi would be as good he is at barca. Also xavi and iniesta have a way better team with spain than meesi does with argetina. seriously compare the teams. its not really close.

only fools or prejudicials or negatives would disagree on that, i m a hardcore barca fan & i admire xavi&iniesta as my role models in football world but Messi is crown on those kingheads and is the smooth&cool executer on those creators feeds, i bet even place Rooney or any A catagored stiker of the world forward to xavi&iniesta i give10000000% surity they wont even come closer to MESSIs contributions for fcb its 100000000000000000000000% great pick by fifa and i congratulate on their judgement as historical one coz to choose from these3 probables!!!!!!!!! Real Deal, you do realize the impact it had on Messi’s performance at the WC though, without Xavi to create for him? He had to create for himself along with creating for teammates, which is hard when you don’t have a teammate(s) who consistently create to help you.

I can tell bacon is a nice guy with his whole second place finish is super duper argument but your wrong. Credit should be given where its due, and after years of top performances, Xavi is due! And I would hardley consider Argentinas WC squad poor, they crushed the group stage and easily defeated Mexico (with the refs help I guess) they only fucked up one game when Maradonna underestimated Germany. Regardless, Messi did not shine in SA, while his other teammates did ie. Higuaine

Ive got to disagree with a couple of things here.

Firstly, Xavi is not underrated, he was classed as the second best player in the world last year, so he’s hardly unnoticed. And though I do agree he should have won the award, to say Messi didn’t deserve it is a little insane.

Secondly, I know Messi have a relatively poor world cup but the Argentine squad was poor and this is a team game, and he and Xavi are team players. Which is why they complement each other so well, and to say that one ‘carries’ the other is simply ridiculous.

The journalist and coaches and all that voted for Messi are blind, they only see the end product, the goal scorer, but they forgot that a goal comes from BUILDING UP, and the person responsible for that all is XAVI. “The award is voted for by journalists, national team bosses and captain of national sides”. Even tho i have pure hatred towards UEFA and their corrupt ways, if we are going to complain about the decision made we need to point fingers at the coaches, journalists and captains who really made the decision to choose Messi. Xavi was robbed. FIFA is full of greedy corrupt dinosaurs. Its unbelievable how underrated Xavi is. The world has to recognize that just because Xavi doesn’t score as many goals and he’s not as flashy as Messi, that games are won and lost through Xavi. Xavi’s greatness can be seen at how his vision, ball control and distribution elevates his teammates game. Without Xavi Messi would only be a fraction of the player he is today. What has Messi done without Xavi? Messi is painfully average with Argentina despite being surrounded by some of the world best talents. This is an aweful disapointment. Its time to walk away from FIFA unless they change their evil ways.

Ho, Ho i wouldve kept miles away………….

By the way messi has 14 assists in the league xavi 4 thats laughable and with 17 goals and xavis 3 goals its not really close is it.

if your talking about Argentina playing crap in WC , you can’t say it’s the teams fault why messi didn’t score, because fact is Argentina didn’t play crap they played good up until Germany game, and if you think they did play crap shouldn’t he be inspiring them to play good? as the best player in the world he should, Ryan Giggs came on for Man Utd after they were 2-0 down against Blackpool, and he inspired his team to win by setting up 2 of their 3 goals

  • Thabo Caves

    0 0

Giggs was playing against blackpool not germany there is a little difference and we are comparing messi to xavi and iniesta who do not have to carry their team because their team is spain who had way better players and a way better coach. this all leads to messi being the best player in the world

  • Ryan

    0 0

Yes but my point is Giggs influences the team, and if your comparing Giggs to Messi, Messi is going to win as the best player in the world and he should be influencing his team what ever team they are playing against, what I am saying is that Messi needs Xavi and Iniesta to influence him and thats why I wouldn’t class him as Player of the year

i think messi paid the officials of fifa, because he does nt decieve it.i think snieder should have been the one.messi did not score even a single goal during the world cup.

Messi – 30 shots no goal

  • Thabo Caves

Why do people look at the world cup and throw everything else someone has done out the window. And that 30 shots no goals is just something that people bring up when they cant argue that thorough the whole season, and guess what the world player of the year voted on by people looking at a players whole year not just the world cup, messi was better than anyone else can think of.

noo lol i didnt you in general i mean like if you do compare them…yea they do play for brilliant teams international n club but they both make the team good, both xavi and iniesta made the most passes in the WC which made it easier for spain. but argentina has a really good team too but need to sort their defence out most their best players are strikers. and i agree with you with the sneijder thing, but you can tell its got nothing to do with their season for instance Rooney didn’t even get into the nominations because he had a dreadful WC, but he had a brilliant season, the premier league is a harder league than La Liga

  • Thabo Caves

    0 0

Okay sure, but again you compare rooney to messi and messi had 8 more goals and 3 more assists throughout the 2009/2010 season and really i don’t think la liga is worse than the premier league why is it better. both barca and real are better than man u who is at the top of the premier league standings

  • Ryan

    0 0

yeaaa i know but im using rooney as an example coz like ozil, muller, klose they were in the nominations so thats why i think it was kinda based on the WC, na i dont think it is worse its just not as tough or hard, loads of commentators and sky representatives have said that, yeaa i do think barca and real are better than man u, but thats coz everyone wants to go there

  • Thabo Caves

Yeah because they are really good and really barca haven’t bought that many people most of their players have come up through their youth system, but now we are off topic from this article so i say we end this here.

i think this will definitely given to wesley sneidjer, last year he is outstanding.he won the italian serie a,italian cup, champion league with best player award, world cup runner up with five goals, fifa world club champion.but messi win only a la liga title and he is a big flop in world cup also, xavi is also deserve this award .,he won worldcup with otstanding performance and also won the la liga title, but surely not at all messi…,he should give that award to sneidjer or xavi……….

  • Irvina

I think Xavi deserved it. but only experts can see what kind a player he is. he is the builder of the game. everything starts from him. I think he should have won

  • Rhotez

Personally,i think sneijer or xavi shud av won it,if we are to consider his world cup and club performances. The journalist, coaches&captain also have their personal reason for choosing messi

  • msa

i meant xavi can pass very well and no 1 can beat him ay that. but messi is all in 1.the journalists and others made a ryt decesion.

Messi is just the Man, even though Xavi and Iniesta also deserve the Award, but Messi surpasses them at Goals and Goals creator. thats why Messi is really the man.

  • Maimo

Xavi or Iniesta where better placed. Messi’s winning was unfair to these other players. They were at top form at all competitions they played World cup, Champions League and European Cup

  • philip

well,in my contribution,i felt so bitter when messi was awarded the ballon d’or cos i saw nothing in wat he played during the world cup.in respect to the teams contribution,i feel messi has done very well for barca but at the national level HE’S A TRASH.INIESTA deserved that title because scoring a winning goal is not a CUP OF TEA. XAVI is another important icon or player that was to be awarded but he was’nt.IT’S A BIG SHAME TO FIFA AND ALL THE BLOODY JOURNALISTS

  • ototo7

i dont tink he deserves it.cos he wasnt really good both in club and national team.i tink xavi deserves it.bt all the same cristiano ronaldo is far better than messi.the reasons and facts are there to see
