Diego has hinted that he is keen to stay at Atletico Madrid beyond this summer.

The 27-year-old has spent the 2011-12 campaign in the Spanish capital following an underwhelming spell back in Germany with Wolfsburg, and played a key role in Atletico’s revival under Diego Simeone, which also included success in the Europa League.

His Spanish adventure appears to have come to an abrupt end, however, with Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath’s insistence that Diego would return to the Volkswagen Arena, but the Brazilian nonetheless took the time to praise the La Liga club.

“In Spain I have lived magical moments, and it’s generated great pleasure and joy, wearing the shirt of red and white together,” said Diego.

“This year was very positive on both an individual and collective level and I’m delighted.”

Currently on a high, Diego admits he is hoping for a recall to the Brazil squad once again after a lengthy hiatus from the Selecao.

“I hope to be in the plans of coach (Mano) Menezes. I understand that I must perform very well for another opportunity in the Selecao because there is a very large turnout of quality players, but I am confident that I will one day return,” he said.

The gifted midfielder also spoke highly about Atletico team-mate Falcao.

“No words are necessary to describe Falcao while playing for Atletico. He is certainly one of the best strikers in the world,” he said.

“As a human being he is amazing. It’s good to have him as a team-mate.”
