Uruguay centre back Diego Lugano is about to join Swedish side BK Hacken, according to his official agent.

The 34-year-old footballer has been a free agent since leaving West Bromwich Albion in May 2014, although he was on the verge of a switch to the Middle East.

Lugano appears to have finally found a new club as he is set to sign a short-term contract with BK Hacken.

“Diego Lugano is already in Gothenburg to sign the contract with the club where he will play until the end of the European summer, BK Hacken,” agent Juan Figer told Reuters.

The veteran defender will put pen to paper on a three-month contract and he hopes regular playing time will increase his chances of making Uruguay’s Copa America squad.

La Celeste will be defending the title at the 2015 tournament in Chile and Lugano is desperate to be a part of Oscar Tabarez’s side.

Despite making 95 appearances for Uruguay, the defender never quite managed to prove his worth in a top European league, albeit enjoying six very successful years with Fenerbahce.
