Aston Villa currently sit second from bottom in the Premier League table after Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Newcastle.
The defeat made it two defeats from two games for new Villans boss Tim Sherwood and they look in major trouble.
It has been a difficult campaign for the Villans to say the least and they are desperately in need of a change in form.
Pressure
The former-Tottenham boss has heaped pressure on his players by telling Sky Sports: “The dressing room is very disappointed but the nature of the game is onwards and upwards,”
“I’m ramping up the pressure on them. I’m telling them we can’t drop any more points.
“Let’s take it upon ourselves. Everyone tries to pile the pressure on us but we put more pressure on ourselves. We have to take points in every game we play. Simple as that.”
Chances
Under former-boss Paul Lambert Villa often struggled to create chances, but at least in yesterday’s game they did just that. Both Christian Benteke and Gabriel Agbonlahor had goals ruled out for offside.
Benteke, Scott Sinclair and Tom Cleverley also all missed opportunities at St James to give the visitors something from their trip to the north east.
Goal Difference
Villa are only in the relegation zone on goal difference at the moment. However, fourth from bottom QPR have a game in-hand, so possibly have the advantage, although the Hoops host London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham at Loftus Road in their next two games.
It is not like Sherwood’s men are cut adrift at the bottom of the table. They still have time to save themselves, but it they have to up their performances.
Crucial
Villa will be looking at their next three Premier League games as ones that they probably should take something from. The Villans host West Brom at Villa Park in midweek in what could be a crucial game for Sherwood’s men.
The Baggies will be no pushovers, as boss Tony Pulis now has his team well-drilled at the back. They have kept three consecutive clean sheets to move eight points clear of the dreaded drop zone.
Villa will need to improve immensely on Tuesday night if they are to gain that vital confidence-boosting victory. Sherwood’s side then face a trip to Sunderland, before hosting Swansea City at home.
If Villa have any chance of staying in the Premier League, then these are the sort of games that they have to start winning and quickly. Villa definitely have some crucial six-pointers to come between now and the end of the season.
Losing
Aston Villa’s confidence must be shot at the moment, as the Villans have not won in 12 Premier League games and have lost their last seven games in the top-flight. The change of boss was expected to improve their confidence and hopefully end that losing streak.
Villa have not really experienced that lift that a new boss usually gives a team and they are in desperate need of a victory to lift that flagging confidence. If that win comes in the next few games then Villa could just save their campaign.
Poor
In truth the quality in the Aston Villa squad has been being diluted over the past few seasons. This summer their summer signings suggested that the Villans would struggle this season. Their bright start to the campaign saw Villa pick-up three wins in their first four Premier League games.
The Villans have picked-up just two more league victories since then and have just gone from bad to worse. The phrase too good to go down has been mentioned about Aston Villa, but they are by no means too good to go down.
Relegation
Villa are in the relegation dogfight and are currently odds of evens to be relegated this season. They are in big trouble and maybe the Villans could finally pay the price for a lack of investment in the squad with relegation this season.
Will Aston Villa be relegated this season?
