Do Manchester United need to heavily strengthen their squad this summer?

Manchester United have enjoyed a successful campaign. They may have lost the Champions League final to Barcelona but the Red Devils managed to claim a record breaking 19th English league title.

Retirements

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has already had to contend with the retirements of midfielder Paul Scholes and goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar.

Although Paul Scholes hasn’t played as much this season as in previous campaigns he was still a superb player.

Keeper Edwin Van Der Sar will be really hard to replace. The Dutchman has been a reliable last line of defence for the last six years and has been consistently superb throughout his stay at Old Trafford.

Replacements

Even without those two retirements Manchester United must have been looking to strengthen their squad. Manchester United seem to have found a replacement for Van Der Sar in Atletico Madrid’s David De Gea.

The youngster has been linked with a move for the goalkeeper for along time and it only seems to be a matter of time before United get their man.

Needed

Manchester United are in need of back-up in most areas of the pitch. The most obvious one being between the posts. However I think the Red Devils are definitely in need of midfield players as well.

Targets

Apart from David De Gea Manchester United have been linked with summer moves for a number of top players. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson seems to have made midfield reinforcements his priority.

United have been linked with a move for Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri but Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has stated that the Frenchman won’t be joining the champions.

More realistic targets are Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric and Inter attacking midfielder Wesley Sneijder. Croatian international midfielder Modric has refused to rule out a move away from White Hart Lane.

Tottenham are not keen on selling the talented midfielder but if he expresses a desire to leave then I can see him joining United. Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder has made no secret of his disappointment with Inter’s campaign.

However he has made claims that he will be at Inter next season. The question is would he really turn down United if they had a bid accepted? I think the opportunity would be hard to turn down.

Sneijder is just the sort of player that the United midfield is crying out for. The sort of player of player that can pick a pass and also chip in with goals. He is one of the most outstanding attacking midfielders in the world.

A player with potential that Manchester United have been linked with in the past is Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell. A fee of £15million had been mooted in the past but the youngsters development has been hindered by injuries in the last year or so.

Sunderland’s Jordan Henderson has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford. The North East side are believed to be asking for £20million for the youngster. However he is in the same category as Rodwell, in that he is full of promise but isn’t yet the finish product.

One player who combines Premier League experience and quality is Aston Villa winger Ashley Young. The England international has been linked with a move away from the Midlands this summer and Old Trafford is being mooted as a potential destination.

Competitive

This summer is set to be a busy one at Old Trafford and the Red Devils will need to strengthen with their rivals looking to be more competitive next season.

The likes of Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool are all set to spend big this summer in a bid to improve their fortunes next season. However no matter how much their rivals spend this summer I wouldn’t bet against Manchester United clinching their 20th English league title next May.

Who would Manchester United fans like to see at Old Trafford next season?

i personally think bringing nasri to the club would really boost the midfield but Arsenal would never enter negotiations with us. However i think a new striker would an even better idea because i mean Young isnt that good, Rooney and Chicharito are amazing but they need breaks too, Owen’s not gonna play, and Berbatov can’t be the only reliable sub available for the offense…..

People we just need to change our midfield a bit. With no big club not interested in sellin their star midfielders (nas, modric, adam, sneijder) especially to us i think we might have to wait one more season to win e ECL. Think our chances on e domestic front are way better though! I say we’ll win at least 2. United forever!

    My top 11 is

    Goal Keeper: David Da Gea
Defence: Smalling, Jones, Ferdinand, Vidic, Fabio, Rafael
    Midfield: Nani, Anderson, Valencia, (Sneijder/Nasri)
    Attack: Berbatov, Rooney, Hernandez

This is the Team we should play

What Man United must do is keep there talent and get rid of those who cause problems and make mistakes like Carrick and Fletcher. They really do worse than better in Man United, they muant get rid of Berbatov and Nani, that will be a big mistake but that Alex F. He likes to get rid of good players like Rossi, Pique, Tevez and more, all talent that has made it big elsewhere.
i think we should try our best to sign Nasri and Sneijder at any cost cause than Man U will be a force that not even Chelsea can master.

I think its to much money spent by Ferguson he better stop making trasfers next season.Maybe 1 or 2 transfers will be needed. But he still has used alot of money on diffrent players other than A.Young and D.De Gea

Give more game time to Anderson and Nani as well as Chacharito.these are the future stars of man u.Forget about placing Nani on trasfer list, the boy has a lot of potential and he loves the club.what is the use of bringing in the so called good player who don’t even like the club.they will leave man u for real madrid once they are at their peak and it sucks.united need to learn their lesson.

well…well…well…MANTUD can win win premier league with the current squad but in european cup…still need a talented and creative midfielder plus a reliable striker…please sell berbatov and carrick both were not consistent especially in critical match…..

^yeah we shouldn’t keep either of the Evans boys, they easily get caught out of positions and make rash tackles like the one that injured Bolton midfielder Stuart Holden.

  • Hedley (Fergie's consultant)

    0 0

Our backline is fine including Jones and Smailing for the furure. Get rid of Evans,

Our midfield should be Sneider, Modric and Hazard. Get rid of Anderson, Nani and Park they fall over too often and Nani misses 9 out of10 and carrick .keep giggs for the bench.

Minor changes in attack Valencia and Young on the wings.

Keep Berbatov but use him in Rooney’s position to serve Rooney and Chicharito as spearheads or as a replacement when they are injured or out of form

    Bring on the Barca

As rooney is always dropping fairly deep you dont need an attacking midfielder. Ideally, if you were looking at central midfielders you would want somebody who sits back and distributes, or a ball winner, but united dont need to buy anyone, they just won the league for petes sake!

So it is quite ease to see that ManU needs to strengthen the squad.
GK- Looks like David De Gea is on yhis way wich I think would be a huge signing. Much needed.
RB- We seriously need a new attaching RB as OShea just isnt cutting it for me. Maybe Dannty Alves would be a sick signing.
We need a new deffencive Mid, some one like Henrique as he has amde a HUGE impression in brazil and has just got a call up for the Brazilian squad.
A new attaching option in the Mid field area wouldnt go astrae either. Id say someone like Javior Pastore from Palarmo would AWESOME! that is all I can see for this season anyway.

Utd will need to strengthen their midfield, now that scholes has retired.UTD needs a little more creativity and I think sneijder is the perfect fit. A goal keeper is a must now that VDS has retired also. De gea is a good prospect, he’s young and if SAF has chosen him to be VDS’s replacement, he must be good and given his age(de gea 20) it could be a bargain to get him for the price being asked. I’d be tempted to buy someone to replace giggs for the very near future, given his age he may not be able to perform on the same level week in week out (not saying he hasn’t or he won’t) but still, if gareth bale could be bought…i see him bringing more strength to UTD’s attack.

Ok, here it goes – my pick of the litter (unreaslistically as they may be) :). I’d like SAF to go for domestic talent, and with a fantasy transfer-kitty of 1 gazillion £ these transfers might just go through ;-p

GK: My 1st pick would be Joe Hart, but that’s never gonna happen, so I’d say: Get Ben Foster back.

    DR: Micah Richards

DC: With the current configuration there’s no need to bring in reinforcements, and with Evans and Smalling waiting to step in, United will have a great central defence for years to come. I have faith in them fulfilling their potential in the next few years.

    DL: Gareth Bale

MC: Rodwell and Henderson and I’d even say Cattermole as well.

M R/L: Ashley Young and Alex Oxlade

SC: With Welbeck returning from loan and Owen signing an extension there’s no need to splash excessive amounts of cash here.

A strong midfielder to replace Paul Scholes is defintely needed. Full back is also required

  • Hedley (Fergie's consultant)

Our backline is fine including Jones and Smailing for the furure. Get rid of Evans,

Our midfield should be Sneider, Modric and Hazard. Get rid of Anderson, Nani and Park they fall over too often and Nani misses 9 out of10 and carrick .keep giggs for the bench.

Minor changes in attack Valencia and Young on the wings.

Keep Berbatov but use him in Rooney’s position to serve Rooney and Chicharito as spearheads or as a replacement when they are injured or out of form

    Bring on the Barca

^yeah we shouldn’t keep either of the Evans boys, they easily get caught out of positions and make rash tackles like the one that injured Bolton midfielder Stuart Holden.

well…well…well…MANTUD can win win premier league with the current squad but in european cup…still need a talented and creative midfielder plus a reliable striker…please sell berbatov and carrick both were not consistent especially in critical match…..

I think its to much money spent by Ferguson he better stop making trasfers next season.Maybe 1 or 2 transfers will be needed. But he still has used alot of money on diffrent players other than A.Young and D.De Gea

    My top 11 is

    Goal Keeper: David Da Gea
Defence: Smalling, Jones, Ferdinand, Vidic, Fabio, Rafael
    Midfield: Nani, Anderson, Valencia, (Sneijder/Nasri)
    Attack: Berbatov, Rooney, Hernandez

This is the Team we should play

People we just need to change our midfield a bit. With no big club not interested in sellin their star midfielders (nas, modric, adam, sneijder) especially to us i think we might have to wait one more season to win e ECL. Think our chances on e domestic front are way better though! I say we’ll win at least 2. United forever!

i personally think bringing nasri to the club would really boost the midfield but Arsenal would never enter negotiations with us. However i think a new striker would an even better idea because i mean Young isnt that good, Rooney and Chicharito are amazing but they need breaks too, Owen’s not gonna play, and Berbatov can’t be the only reliable sub available for the offense…..
