Manchester United have enjoyed a successful campaign. They may have lost the Champions League final to Barcelona but the Red Devils managed to claim a record breaking 19th English league title.
Retirements
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has already had to contend with the retirements of midfielder Paul Scholes and goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar.
Although Paul Scholes hasn’t played as much this season as in previous campaigns he was still a superb player.
Keeper Edwin Van Der Sar will be really hard to replace. The Dutchman has been a reliable last line of defence for the last six years and has been consistently superb throughout his stay at Old Trafford.
Replacements
Even without those two retirements Manchester United must have been looking to strengthen their squad. Manchester United seem to have found a replacement for Van Der Sar in Atletico Madrid’s David De Gea.
The youngster has been linked with a move for the goalkeeper for along time and it only seems to be a matter of time before United get their man.
Needed
Manchester United are in need of back-up in most areas of the pitch. The most obvious one being between the posts. However I think the Red Devils are definitely in need of midfield players as well.
Targets
Apart from David De Gea Manchester United have been linked with summer moves for a number of top players. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson seems to have made midfield reinforcements his priority.
United have been linked with a move for Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri but Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has stated that the Frenchman won’t be joining the champions.
More realistic targets are Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric and Inter attacking midfielder Wesley Sneijder. Croatian international midfielder Modric has refused to rule out a move away from White Hart Lane.
Tottenham are not keen on selling the talented midfielder but if he expresses a desire to leave then I can see him joining United. Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder has made no secret of his disappointment with Inter’s campaign.
However he has made claims that he will be at Inter next season. The question is would he really turn down United if they had a bid accepted? I think the opportunity would be hard to turn down.
Sneijder is just the sort of player that the United midfield is crying out for. The sort of player of player that can pick a pass and also chip in with goals. He is one of the most outstanding attacking midfielders in the world.
A player with potential that Manchester United have been linked with in the past is Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell. A fee of £15million had been mooted in the past but the youngsters development has been hindered by injuries in the last year or so.
Sunderland’s Jordan Henderson has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford. The North East side are believed to be asking for £20million for the youngster. However he is in the same category as Rodwell, in that he is full of promise but isn’t yet the finish product.
One player who combines Premier League experience and quality is Aston Villa winger Ashley Young. The England international has been linked with a move away from the Midlands this summer and Old Trafford is being mooted as a potential destination.
Competitive
This summer is set to be a busy one at Old Trafford and the Red Devils will need to strengthen with their rivals looking to be more competitive next season.
The likes of Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool are all set to spend big this summer in a bid to improve their fortunes next season. However no matter how much their rivals spend this summer I wouldn’t bet against Manchester United clinching their 20th English league title next May.
Who would Manchester United fans like to see at Old Trafford next season?
