Do Tottenham really look like champions?

Tottenham have been on a superb run in the recent months and sit just two points behind second place Manchester United. Will they be able to go all the way, Premiership betting odds might disagree but Spurs defender William Gallas believes that his team is playing like champions.

Tottenham defender William Gallas believes his team is playing like champions.

Belief

The French ace told the Times: “ We have the look of the champion,”
“I have won trophies and I know what it feels like to win and it is quite possible to do something here too.

“Against West Brom and Fulham we have not played as well. It was the same when I was at Chelsea when sometimes we did not deserve to win a game, but with luck we won 1-0 or maybe 2-1, and it is a little bit like that with Tottenham.

“You play for success, you play to lift yourselves, so now we have to believe in ourselves, work hard to try and catch City. It is very wonderful to see how we play and we can win every game.

“But we should not forget that City are on top and Arsenal are back. It is very important to show again what we can do this season.”

Experience

Gallas knows a few things about being a champion having won two Premier League titles while with Chelsea. He has also won trophies with France so he definitely knows a winning team when he sees one.

Form

Tottenham’s form since losing the opening two games of the season has been fantastic. Their upturn in fortunes coincided with the arrival of midfielder Scott Parker and striker Emmanuel Adebayor. I have already sung the praises of Parker in a recent article, so I think it’s now the turn of the Togo striker.

On his day Emmanuel Adebayor is probably as good as any striker in the Premier League. He has all the attributes of a world-class striker and has proved in the past that he can be prolific in front of goal. His problem lies with his consistency.

Before the Aston Villa game he hadn’t scored in seven games after making a blistering start to his Spurs career. He scored a brace against Villa and also scored a brace against West Brom at the weekend.

Adebayor is the sort of striker who has hot and cold streaks. The important factor in getting the best out of him is trying to keep him in form and scoring. If Tottenham can do that this season then I don’t see why they can’t remain up the top of the table.

Early

However I think it’s a bit early to be talking about Tottenham as potential title challengers. Spurs have a really good squad of quality players. However like every team in the Premier League they are competing against Manchester City and their money.

Future

I do believe however that Tottenham could threaten next season if they can keep hold of Adebayor and keep him scoring. The problem is they may lose manager Harry Redknapp to the England job next summer.

This could have a huge bearing on what the future holds for Tottenham Hotspur. Redknapp has done a fantastic job at White Hart Lane building a team and that’s why he is set to become the England boss. Whoever comes in will have to be an excellent man-manager to get the same out of the team.

Foundations

Harry Redknapp has built the foundations of a top team at Tottenham. Whoever replaces Redknapp at the White Hart Lane helm will have the makings of a title winning side and that is some legacy for the former-Portsmouth boss to leave behind.

Premier League title this season, I don’t think so. The likes of Manchester City and Manchester United are still too far ahead of Tottenham. I’m backing Tottenham to claim a Champions League place this season and that in itself would be an achievement.

Where will Tottenham finish this season?
