Dutch youngster Memphis Depay has struggled to make an impact at Manchester United.

Manchester United forward Memphis Depay was omitted from the first-team squad in the Red Devils’ 1-0 win against Hull City, and has made just a handful of minutes under new manager Jose Mourinho in all competitions this season.

The 22-year-old has been dropped from the Dutch national team as a result of a poor 2016, and as deadline day approaches in the summer transfer window, could Depay be put up for sale?

Lack of games and goals in 2016

Memphis Depay had a forgettable debut season with Manchester United, scoring just two goals in the Premier League in 29 games. There have been question marks about his attitude throughout his time at Old Trafford, and he’s fallen down the pecking order as a result.

Depay played very little football for the Red Devils in 2016 after a poor showing in his first few months at the club. He went six months without scoring in the league, and made just four starts in the Premier League in 2016. Former United manager Louis van Gaal lost faith in the forward and reduced him to sporadic substitute appearances to little avail.

From March onwards, Depay played just 254 minutes of Premier League football for Manchester United, but was still being criticised for a poor attitude in the camp which did little to his chances of regular game time. The change in manager this summer meant Depay could get a clean slate, but he’s still be out of favour.

Stiff competition for a starting place

Anthony Martial has been a regular in Memphis Depay favourite position, cutting inside from the left-wing on his favoured right foot to score and create chances, but the Dutchman has a number of players keeping him out of the squad currently that doesn’t bode well for his chances over the course of the season.

New manager Jose Mourinho has already said striker Marcus Rashford will be utilised in a wide area at times this season, and the likes of Jesse Lingard and Ashley Young have made the matchday squads over Depay, which suggests there are a lot of players ahead of him in the pecking order. The form of Martial has been poor of late, and Depay is trying to take advantage, posting videos of his fitness regime.

However, Depay’s future at Manchester United looks bleak with the forward failing to make the squad in three of their four games this season. There are days remaining in the summer transfer window, but will Depay be sold?
