Borussia Dortmund have confirmed Mario Gotze will be leaving the club this summer for the second time.
The attacking midfielder came through the ranks at Dortmund and was promoted to the first team in 2010. He was a big part of the team that won consecutive Bundesliga titles in the following two seasons and reached the Champions League final in 2013. That summer he broke the club supporters’ hearts by joining fierce rivals Bayern Munich. However, things didn’t work out for him there and he returned to the Signal Iduna Park in 2016.
Ever since his first departure from the club, injuries and other health issues have been a hindering factor in his career. The player whose goal won the 2014 World Cup for Germany will now leave Dortmund again, but this time not as a rising star seeking more trophies, but as a 27-year-old, withered untimely, whose services are no longer needed.
Speaking ahead of Dortmund’s 0-2 triumph away at Wolfsburg on Saturday, sporting director Michael Zorc said the decision was mutual and respectful, describing Gotze as a ‘great man’.
