(GSM) – Borussia Dortmund celebrated the 100th anniversary of the club’s founding with a 1-0 victory over Freiburg on Saturday. The result sent Die Schwarzgelben fourth in the Bundesliga table.
Lucas Barrios put the home side in front in the 20th minute when he headed in a cross by Marcel Schmelzer, beating Freiburg goalkeeper Simon Pouplin from close range. The goal gave the Argentinian striker his ninth goal of the season and fourth in three games.
Schmelzer had a shot of his own blocked by Ivica Banovic later in the half, but Freiburg held firm and had their own moments going forward to keep the game very much in doubt for the home side.
Dede returned from injury after a long layoff for Dortmund in the second half, and Freiburg never could quite get into the flow of the game, leaving the men in yellow to celebrate the victory.
Dortmund were founded on 19 December 1909, and the win was exactly what the fans wanted to celebrate the club’s centenary. In the past 100 years, Dortmund have won six Bundesliga titles, most recently in 2001-02. They were also crowned champions of Europe in 1997, and they won the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1966.
