Borussia Dortmund general manager Michael Zorc has confirmed the club’s interest in Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko, Sky Sports understands.
Dzeko, 27, joined Manchester City for £27 million from Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg in January 2011.
The Bosnia and Herzegovina international has netted 28 goals in 70 Premier League matches, 36 starts, since arriving at the Etihad Stadium.
The likes of Sergio Aguero, Mario Balotelli (now at AC Milan) and Carlos Tevez have all kept Dzeko out of Roberto Mancini’s starting XI for much of his time in Manchester.
As suggested by Mancini, Dzeko’s lack of starts could spur on a summer move, with Dortmund viewed as the favourites for his signature.
Dortmund general manager Michael Zorc has conceded that the two-time Bundesliga champions are keen on the Bosnian, but that no agreement is already in place.
“There should be little doubt about Edin Dzeko being a top-class striker,” Zorc told Sport-Bild.
“He is a great forward and a player one should be keen on. However there is also still somewhat of an economic aspect.
“It would be down to pure maths because Edin Dzeko is under contract at Manchester City beyond the end of the season.”
Dzeko has bagged 12 goals and two assists in 25 league appearances, 12 starts, for City this season.
Dortmund have also been linked with the likes of Christian Benteke and Mame Biram Diouf in recent weeks, with Robert Lewandowski set to leave Signal Iduna Park in the summer.
Santon flattered by Milan talk
Newcastle United defender Davide Santon is happy with his current situation, but admitted he would think about ‘packing his bags’ for Milan if the Serie A giants came calling in the summer, Sky Sports reports.
Santon, 22, is currently enjoying the best run of his career, having started all 30 of the Magpies’ Premier League matches this season.
As a result, the once highly-touted FC Internazionale Milano starlet — like Mario Balotelli — was linked with a move to AC Milan during the January transfer window.
According to reports, Milan are expected to renew their interest in Santon when the transfer window reopens in July.
The 22-year-old is flattered by the Milan link, but admitted he is happy with life in Newcastle.
“I’m really happy in Newcastle,” Santon told the Gazzetta dello Sport. “I like the city, the club and the atmosphere.
“I’m also engaged to Chloe and we’re expecting a baby in May. I live like a king in Newcastle and I have a contract until 2016.
“A return to Italy? At Newcastle I’m a king and I have a contract until 2016. But I’ve heard of the interest from Milan in me and that is really pleasing because I have been a Milan fan since I was a child
“I’m not sure what would happen if another Italian club came in for me, but I’d seriously think about packing my bags for Milan.”
Santon, who added that the presence of former Internazionale team-mate Mario Balotelli at AC Milan would be an ‘incentive’ to join the Rossoneri, has tallied one goal and two assists in 36 competitive appearances for Newcastle United this season.
