Two sides that were tipped by many as an early season favorite to be challenging for top spot in the Eastern Conference, Columbus Crew and Atlanta United will meet at MAPFRE Stadium on Thursday.
For Columbus, while they have endured a difficult month and had to face off against the likes of New York RB, Sporting Kansas City and defending champions Toronto, Gregg Berhalter’s side have managed to finish each game with a point and the Yellow and Blacks have now only tasted defeat once in their last nine. For The Crew, their recent success against the MLS’ bigger sides can be put down to forward Gyasi Zardes, the former LA Galaxy man now has 10 for the season and is the second top scorer in the MLS, Zardes also has two in his last two.
As for Gerardo Martino’s side, Atlanta could not have wished for a better start to their new campaign and along with sitting three points clear at the top of the Eastern Conference, no team in either division has scored more goals in the MLS. On that note, one man to watch for Atlanta will be 25-year-old Josef Martinez, the forward has enjoyed his own stellar start to the new season and already leads the MLS goalscoring charts with 13, Martinez also has five in his last three. Atlanta have also only lost two of their last 14 matches in all competitions and are yet to be beaten on the road since the start of March.
