Roberto Martinez has described Wigan’s 1-1 draw against West Brom as a “footballing injustice” after his side dominated most of the game.
The point pulled the Latics level with QPR and Bolton in the Premier League relegation zone, but they missed the chance to escape the bottom three when Paul Scharner levelled for the visitors.
Despite the frustrating afternoon, Martinez spoke of his pride in his side’s performance, but admitted he was disappointed they could not earn their second home victory of the season.
“I think in many ways you share a feeling of footballing injustice because I thought our performance was dominant,” Martinez said.
“We created chance after chance, and we could have finished the game winning by three or four goals that’s how dominant we were.”
“Unfortunately, once more, the good play doesn’t reflect in the score line and that’s been the frustration that we end up with.”
The result leaves Wigan just nine games to avoid the drop, having played a game more than their nearest rivals, and Martinez remained confident his side could get out of trouble again.
“We’ve been very consistent and we need to keep on this level for the rest of the season and I’m sure lady luck will give us back something that we deserve,” he said.
“It’s another point earned and we need to get ready for the next nine games and learn from today once more.”
“It’s a tough game to swallow because we did everything that we had to do.”
“We are a strong side away from home and we feel we can compete against anyone. We have to find a way to be competitive.”
“We’ve been dropping too many points without deserving it, we have to go and try and find points where they are not easy to find.”
West Brom boss Roy Hodgson admitted his side were second-best but was pleased with the fight shown by his players.
“Wigan played very well,” Hodgson said. “It was obviously a very important game for them to win and they certainly went about it in the right way, they committed a lot of players forward.”
“I don’t think we were anywhere near our best in terms of our attacking play but I left a few players out of the team to give others a chance.”
“I’ve got to be very satisfied with a point and sympathise with Wigan, while praising my team for their resilience, for their character and their desire to get something out of this game despite the fact we’re in a more comfortable position in the league.”
“We could have been expected on a day like today to crumble and succumb to the pressure but we never did.”
