Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has admitted the Blues are an ‘unhappy’ team following their recent form slump and slide down the table.
The reigning Premier League champions have fallen to fifth in the midst of a shocking run of results, having won one of their last eight league games.
The slump has seen Chelsea fall six points behind table-toppers Manchester United, and Drogba said the pressure is beginning to take its toll on his team-mates and boss Carlo Ancelotti.
“In the last weeks Carlo Ancelotti has been unhappy – and the squad, too. Chelsea are not accustomed to defeats and the dressing room has suffered,” Drogba told The Sun.
“But the season is long and it is normal to suffer lots of changes.”
“We play Wolverhampton next and I hope our bad phase has disappeared. We need three points and that’s the most important thing.”
The Ivory Coast international also acknowledged his own struggles with form, conceding he is yet to regain full fitness since contracting malaria late last year.
“Injuries and the malaria have damaged my performances,” he said.
“I am still not 100 percent but I am fighting in each match to improve my playing levels and help the team.”
“This season has been complicated for me by physical problems.”
“It has not been easy to regain my strength but we need the points and my presence is necessary. I have always sacrificed for the team – and Chelsea need me.”
“Chelsea’s current position compared to last season is actually very similar but maybe our injuries and less goals have brought about a negative mood.”
Despite their struggles Drogba believes Chelsea can still repeat as league champions, and says rash signings in the January transfer window are not the way to arrest the Blues’ form slump.
“Although many people believe our situation is difficult Chelsea still have a chance to win the title,” he said.
“The league is very open and anything is possible.”
“So emotions will run high until the end of the season – but we cannot afford any more errors. And we need to be invincible at Stamford Bridge.”
“Reinforcements in January are always complicated. More players don’t necessarily guarantee victories.”
“For us now each match is a final – and we need wins.”
