African footballing icons Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto’o were among a raft of footballing stars from their continent taking part in a charity match on Monday here for children orphaned by the 1994 genocide.
The match was organised as part of the “One Dollar Campaign” which was launched in April this year on the 15th anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsi minority that left at least 800,000 people dead.
Arsenal’s Kolo Toure, Barcelona’s Champions League winner Yaya Toure and Galatasaray’s Cameroon veteran Rigobert Song were also among the star-studded line-up at the slightly delayed kick-off late on Monday, an AFP correspondent reported.
The money collected during the game and charity dinner to be hosted by President Paul Kagame is slated for housing projects to improve the lives of the tens of thousands of children who lost their families in 1994.
