Chelsea legend Didier Drogba has place confidence in Fernando Torres after hypothesizing that the Spaniard will be a key player for the Blues next season.
In a nutshell, Drogba’s imminent departure will pave the way for Fernando Torres to become the main front-man for Chelsea in 2012-13.
“It’s been difficult for him [Torres], but he has showed he is the man,” the Ivorian striker told the BBC.
“Next season is going to be his season and I will try to speak to him. We have a good relationship. We don’t understand why we didn’t play together more, but that’s the past. Torres is the future.”
Drogba’s remarks will surely give Torres a boost in self-confidence after not being selected for the UEFA Champions League final.
Following Chelsea’s triumph, the former Liverpool talisman stated that not being selected by Di Matteo was one of the biggest disappointments of his career, and understandably so.
Torres had scored four goals in his previous five appearances heading into the European Cup final.
With that said, Di Matteo was never really going to leave out Drogba.
The Italian did reveal to the media that he was debating whether or not he should start Drogba and Torres, but that was surely just managerial mind games.
Following his praise of Torres, Drogba also revealed why it is time for him to leave Stamford Bridge.
“Winning the game was the turning point, that’s why I have decided to say goodbye,” added Drogba.
“We made the story together and I want people to remember that. This is the best time to move on.
“Yes, there’s a chance that if the result was different, maybe I would be here.”
To be honest, I think Drogba’s made the right decision for himself and for Chelsea FC.
Now that he’s undoubtedly sealed his place in history forever, it’s just time for a new challenge.
Furthermore, his best days are behind him and Chelsea need a world-class striker in their starting XI.
Now then, is Fernando Torres that man? Maybe, but maybe not.
Report: Chelsea keen on Hulk
According to the Daily Mail, Teodoro Fonseca, the agent of FC Porto striker Hulk, has admitted that Chelsea are interested in signing the 25-year-old Brazilian.
Hulk enjoyed another solid season in 2011-12, but failed to match his goal-scoring output of the previous season.
Nonetheless, the striker bagged 16 goals in 23 appearances in the Portuguese Liga, and added four goals and one assist in six Champions League starts.
In contrast, Fernando Torres netted six goals in 34 Premier League games this past season, while tallying three goals and four assists in 10 UCL appearances.
That raises the question, who will be Chelsea’s main front-man in 2012-13?
