Controversial, brilliant and villain are just a few words that have been used to describe Barcelona’s new big money signing Luis Suarez.
The Uruguayan forward arrived in the Catalan capital this summer from Liverpool in a strangely low key manner, largely due to his actions at this summer’s World Cup, which we will get to later on.
Drama
This weekend will see the first El Clasico of the season, as Real Madrid host arch-rivals Barcelona at the Bernabeu.
The game usually brings drama and excitement. At times it is like a pantomime and this year the game could have an extra villain, or hero.
Luis Suarez has now served his four month worldwide football ban for chumping on Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini during the World Cup.
His ban from any football related activity meant he was denied the traditional welcome of a new signing to the Spanish game. There was no parading at the clubs stadium with thousands of fans, just a shot of Suarez in his clubs new shirt.
In a strange twist of fate the first official game that the Uruguayan will be eligible to play in is Saturday’s El Clasico, in typical Suarez style.
Luis Suarez has never been one for a quiet life. In fact the Uruguayan international is a news man’s dream. If he is not producing breathtaking pieces of skills and tormenting opposition defences, then he is biting opposition players. Three times is obviously the charm for the Uruguayan.
The 27-year-old seems to be tailor made for the drama and excitement of El Clasico. There are very few players who have the character of Suarez. He is a unique player and like his El Clasico contemporaries Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi has the ability to change a game in a blink of an eye.
Frightening
The former-Liverpool striker could be set to form a three-pronged Barcelona attack with Lionel Messi and Brazilian star Neymar. On paper the thought of the three superstars in one team is a frightening one for opposition.
In the past there have been other superstars pitched in alongside the brilliant Messi, who have failed to be a successful at Barcelona, the biggest example being Swedish superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who seemed the perfect foil for the majestic Argentinian.
However, Ibrahimovic was considered a failure at Barcelona in his one season, despite the fact he scored 16 La Liga goals and helped the Catalans win La Liga in 2010. He just did not fit into the Barca style at the time and was shipped off to AC Milan.
Neymar’s arrival at Barcelona last summer was heralded as a big coup for the Catalan giants. The former-Santos player is considered one of the most exciting young players in world football, yet his first season at the Nou camp was not considered a great success either, as he did not combine with Messi in the way people had expected.
This season has been a different story under Luis Enrique though, as the two South American stars seem to have found the same wavelength. Throw a third South American amigo into the melting pot and Barcelona has the ingredients for a very tasty dish indeed.
Fitness
Suarez has spent a long-time on the sidelines kicking his heels and not being able to play. He has obviously been training, playing warm-up games and getting to know his new teammates, but he will lack the match sharpness that comes with playing competitive football on a regular basis.
There are doubts over whether Barcelona will start with Suarez in the Spanish capital. The logical decision may be to keep him on the substitute’s bench and send him on to run at the tired legs of the Real defence in the second half of the game.
Barcelona boss Luis Enrique has been quite vocal about how ready Suarez is to feature for his side though, so he may well start the game.
Star
Without a doubt Luis Suarez is a star. El Clasico seems to have featured a galaxy of them in recent years, with Ronaldo and Messi just a few of the players that have had a major effect on one of football’s biggest games.
If Suarez does feature in El Clasico, then you can guarantee there will be fireworks. With Suarez you just never know what is going to happen.
El Clasico and Luis Suarez is a match made in heaven and I for one hope that the Uruguayan does feature for Barcelona, as he may just have an immediate impact on the drama that is El Clasico.
Should Luis Suarez start El Clasico for Barcelona?
