Australia midfielder Brett Emerton has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a cruciate knee ligament injury, the 29-year-old’s club, Blackburn Rovers, announced Monday.
Emerton was injured during Saturday’s goalless Premier League draw with Rovers’s fellow relegation candidates Middlesbrough and is now set to have surgery which could keep him sidelined for up to six months.
El-Hadji Diouf, a recent signing from Sunderland, could take Emerton’s place wide on the right.
The injury to Emerton, who arrived at Ewood Park for 2.2 million pounds in 2003 from Dutch side Feyenoord, will be a blow to manager Sam Allardyce as he bids to keep north-west side Rovers in the top flight.
