Valencia coach Unai Emery highlighted his team’s defensive work as the foundation of their 2-0 victory over Levante on Saturday.
A Javi Venta own-goal and Alberto Costa’s second-half free kick proved enough for Valencia to take all three points in the derby match at the Estadio Ciutat de Valencia.
It was Levante’s first defeat at home this season, and their second in succession after previously enjoying a seven-match winning streak.
Emery was keen to praise his team for their disciplined performance, which prevented Juan Ignacio Martinez’s side from gaining a foothold in the contest.
“We came to win, but first we had to neutralise (Jose) Barkero, (Arouna) Kone, Juanlu and the other attackers in the Levante side, and we succeeded,” Emery said.
“We performed with intensity, character and intelligence, but I think we also learned to handle a good team that had won every game they previously played at home.”
“We are pleased and now we need continuity.”
Valencia leapfrog Levante into third on the La Liga table, level on points with defending champions Barcelona.
