England could face Brazil here on Saturday with only two first-choice players after captain John Terry suffered an ankle injury that has left him doubtful for the match.
Terry had been expected to speak to the media on the eve of the match but his place at the press conference was taken by Gareth Barry, casting doubt on whether the Chelsea defender will be risked in Saturday’s friendly.
If Terry is ruled out, Barry and Wayne Rooney will be the only representatives of Fabio Capello’s first-choice line-up in the side that takes on the five-times world champions.
Terry’s Chelsea team-mate Frank Lampard flew home on Thursday after suffering a thigh injury in training here which could rule him out of action for his club for up to two months.
Against that backdrop, it appeared unlikely that Capello would contemplate taking any risks with Terry’s fitness.
