England’s players no longer have to worry about being publicly rated by Fabio Capello after marks of their performances in the World Cup were removed from a controversial website on Tuesday.
The ‘Capello Index’ has been a source of angst in the England camp since the England coach first revealed his involvement with the website which planned to use statistical data to rate the displays of every player in the World Cup including his own.
Capello was forced to distance himself from the project before the World Cup after being widely criticised for potentially undermining the squad’s morale if they got bad scores.
The Italian then told a Football Association (FA) board meeting last week that he would have no part in the website in the aftermath of England’s disappointing showing in South Africa.
However, the company behind the Capello Index published ratings of England’s players on Saturday, prompting a furious reaction from the FA, who along with Capello’s representatives, spent Monday trying to get the site taken off the internet.
The site remained active on Tuesday but the ratings for England players at the World Cup had been removed, with the company keen to point out Capello had not been behind the marks anyway.
A statement on the Capello Index website read: “Fabio Capello contributed, with his indisputable knowledge and experience, in the laying down of the foundations of this project: from then on, a team of professors and experts in mathematical and statistical calculations, then went on to create the system used in order to generate the ratings.
“The Capello Index cannot, and must not, be summarised as the vote given by Capello to the players, but is the result of a system which is capable of analysing and evaluating the actual performance adding various scientific variables.
“As far as the evaluation of the performance of the players in the South African World Cup is concerned, we would like to clarify that Fabio Capello did not contribute in the formulation of the results now available online.
“They were obtained thanks to our unique scientific system that is, and will remain, transparent.”
The FA had already confirmed that Capello would have no involvement with the Index while he remains England manager.
Club England managing director Adrian Bevington told the FA’s official website: “After the developments of the weekend, this will not happen while Fabio is England manager.
“Fabio had absolutely no involvement in the ratings that have appeared from the World Cup and did not give his name or approval to them.”
