With Tottenham announcing the arrival of James Maddison in a £40million deal with Leicester on Wednesday, a host of England internationals have stolen plenty of the summer headlines.
As it looks like Declan Rice will be making the move to Arsenal in what will be a British transfer record of over £100million, Bayern Munich are also desperate to complete what would be a blockbuster swoop for England skipper Harry Kane.
However, with next year’s European Championships just around the corner, plenty of Three Lions stars are looking to kick-start their floundering careers this summer.
In what has already become a rollercoaster summer transfer window, we have taken a look at three forgotten England internationals who look set for a much-needed new adventure ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.
Callum Hudson-Odoi
Already watching both Mateo Kovacic and Kai Havertz complete their own respective moves away from Stamford Bridge, it is no secret that Chelsea are undergoing a major squad overhaul this summer.
With Ruben Loftus-Cheek inching towards a move to Italian giants AC Milan and Mason Mount expected to complete his shock move to Manchester United, Callum Hudson-Odoi is another Chelsea academy graduate who is heading for the west London exit.
Despite making a season-long loan switch to German outfit Bayer Leverkusen last season, the three-cap England international could only muster 14 appearances and failed to find any kind of stability in his first adventure outside of England.
With The Guardian reporting earlier in the week that Chelsea have placed a £15million price tag on the 22-year-old forward, Hudson-Odoi himself has accepted that a move away from SW6 is best for all parties this summer.
Reportedly earning in the region of £120,000-per-week and Chelsea are desperate to get his bumper wages off their books, The Guardian’s report suggests that the likes of Fulham, Nottingham Forest and AC Milan have all registered an interest with Hudson-Odoi’s representatives.
Harry Winks
While Harry Winks might have been touted as a long-term England international just four years ago, Tottenham’s academy graduate has quickly become one of European football’s forgotten stars.
Free-falling down Spurs’ pecking order over the past few seasons and reportedly no part of Ange Postecoglou’s plans for next year, the 27-year-old spent last season on loan at Italian outfit Sampdoria as they lost their Serie A status and eventually finished rock-bottom of the table.
With Sampdoria making it clear that they would not be making Winks’ move a permanent one this summer, the 10-cap England international now appears set to start a new adventure in the Championship.
Not earning an England call-up since back in 2020, it has been confirmed that Spurs’ forgotten midfield star is inching towards a £10million move to Leicester.
Likewise, despite making over 200 appearances for his boyhood club, Winks has not been seen in a white jersey since the final day of the 2021/22 campaign.
Desperate to find some fluidity after more than 24 months in the wilderness, Tottenham will certainly feel that they have reached an attractive agreement for all parties.
Ross Barkley
Once compared to Paul Gascoigne after bursting onto the scene with Everton as a teenager, it is fair to say that Ross Barkley has endured a rather public nightmare over the past few years.
While the former Chelsea star might have earned 33 caps for the Three Lions and featured at major international tournaments, Barkley has not received a call-up since 2019 and now finds himself without a club or contract to his name.
While the 29-year-old might have only made the move to Ligue 1 last year, it was confirmed by Nice that the ex-Everton graduate would be released when his contract expires at the end of June.
Making 232 Premier League appearances during his time at Chelsea, Aston Villa and Everton, Barkley faces a huge decision over the next few weeks as he looks to kick-start his once glittering career.
However, now watching both Nice and Chelsea terminate his contracts over the past 18 months, it doesn’t appear that Barkley has a long cue of suitors this summer.
With reported links to Championship outfit Middlesbrough rubbished earlier in the month, Barkley could be eyeing a potential move to the MLS this year.
