Liverpool have finally had the chance to unveil their latest signing, 25-year-old defender Jose Enrique.
The Spaniard completed his move from Newcastle United following months of speculation and made his debut for the club in their 1-1 draw with Sunderland at Anfield in the English Premier League on Saturday.
Enrique joined the Reds for six million pounds, becoming Kenny Dalglish’s fifth off-season signing along with Stewart Downing, Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson and Doni.
Enrique admitted he was surprised to be selected for Saturday’s match but thrilled to join a club with such rich history.
“I’m really, really happy firstly to be here. I think it’s one of the best teams in the world for history. And of course it’s a pleasure to play for this team,” he beamed.
The full-back’s desire to one day play Champions League football was also a factor in his decision.
“Everyone wants to be there and I’ve never played in the Champions League so it’s a dream for me,” the former Villarreal defender said.
“You have to be realistic it’s going to be difficult this year as this is the best league in the world and we have six, seven, eight teams here that are really good.”
There are reports Bolton defender Gary Gahill could become Dalglish’s sixth capture of the transfer window, with a cash-and-player deal involving David Ngog mooted.
