A dominant second-half has helped Ajax move top of the Eredivisie after overpowering Vitesse 4-1 on Friday.
Kolbeinn Sigthorsson hit a brace, while Derk Boerrigter and Christian Eriksen also netted after the break as they recorded a comfortable win at the Amsterdam Arena, despite Alexander Buettner’s late goal for the visitors.
Both sides had several chances in the first half as Boerrigter went closest with his rebounded strike hitting the post, but it was level heading into the interval.
Ajax deservedly took the lead seven minutes after the break as Eriksen curled in the opener after Siem de Jong’s pass found him just outside the area.
They doubled their lead just after the hour when Boerrigter fired past Vitesse goalkeeper Marko Meerits at the near post after receiving a long diagonal pass from Toby Alderweireld.
Less than two minutes later, Ajax found themselves 3-0 up when Sigthorsson turned in Gregory van der Wiel’s low, whipped cross.
The Icelandic striker doubled his tally for the night seven minutes later when he powered a low 25-yard shot past Meerits.
Chances were rare after that, until Vitesse grabbed a consolation goal through Buettner just before time.
Ajax are top, while Vitesse remain fourth, but all other Eredivisie teams play this weekend.
