AZ Alkmaar missed a chance to go six points clear atop the Eredivisie on Wednesday after a goalless draw against Excelsior.
Both sides only played 45 minutes of action at the Stadion Woudestein in Rotterdam as they completed a fixture that had originally been postponed.
That match – played on November 20 – was suspended at half-time due to fog, so the two sides resumed at the half-way point with no goals in the game so far.
AZ headed into the resumption with plenty of motivation after being smashed 5-1 by Heerenveen on Sunday, while Excelsior, who have just won once this season, were hoping to contain their more-fancied opponents.
And that they did as the final 45 minutes remained goalless, leaving AZ winless for the third game in a row in all competitions.
They remain four points ahead of the second-placed PSV, but Gert Verbeek’s side will be desperate to return to the winners list when they host strugglers De Graafschap on Saturday.
