Feyenoord kicked off their Eredivisie campaign in style with a 2-0 away victory over Excelsior on Friday.
After a scoreless first half, Feyenoord opened the scoring through Guyon Fernandez, who lashed home a right-footed effort in the 55th minute at Stadion Woudestein.
Ivorian attacker Sekou Cisse pushed forwards for the visitors, and after cutting inside a defender, his cross to the far post found only Excelsior shirts.
But a poor clearance from Samuel Scheimann saw the ball land at the feet of striker Fernandez, and the Dutchman made no mistake.
Scheimann went close to making up for his mistake with a 62nd-minute free-kick, but his effort curled past the far post.
A speculative long-range effort from Roland Alberg almost brought about an equaliser in the 69th minute, as Feyenoord goalkeeper Erwin Mulder failed to catch the strike, but he was able to recover the ball in plenty of time.
But just two minutes later, Feyenoord doubled their lead, courtesy of a fine run down the right side from Jerson Cabral.
Cabral beat several defenders before curling a short cross towards the goalmouth, only for Excelsior defender Leen van Steensel to get the final touch for an own goal.
Excelsior should have pulled a goal back in the 86th minute, when Daan Bovenberg’s well weighted ball found the head of Tim Vincken, but his attempt on goal was denied by the crossbar, despite Mulder being well beaten.
Feyenoord are at home against Roda JC next, while Excelsior are on the road at NEC for their upcoming fixture.
