A second-half burst from Groningen saw them defeat Vitesse Arnhem 4-1 in Friday’s Eredivisie action.
Pieter Huistra’s side continued their stellar season in the Dutch top flight with another impressive home display that catapults them into third spot on the table.
Losses to Heracles and Roda JC in their last three matches had Groningen fired up for the encounter against a Vitesse side who were defending a six match unbeaten streak in all competitions.
The first half was bereft of many goal-scoring opportunities but the game burst into life when Gino Felixdaal gave away a penalty just eight minutes after the break.
Swedish defender Andreas Granqvist dispatched the penalty before Groningen extended their advantage in the 63rd minute via Tim Matavz.
The hosts added another goal four minutes later when Petter Andersson scored, but Vitesse quickly found a response through substitute Marcus Pedersen.
An 81st minute strike from Tim Sparv sealed the result which sees Groningen leapfrog traditional powerhouse Ajax in the league standings.
Vitesse remain in 14th after the defeat but can be overtaken by Feyenoord and Excelsior over the weekend.
