Heerenveen saw off a spirited challenge from Roda JC to post a 4-3 victory and move fourth in the Eredivisie.
Bas Dost gave hosts Heerenveen an early lead at Abe Lenstra Stadion, the Dutch striker netting his 18th goal of the season after five minutes.
Roda striker Sanharib Malki levelled four minutes later, before Daryl Janmaat restored Heerenveen’s advantage.
But goals either side of half-time from Malki and Davy de Beule gave Roda a surprise lead after 51 minutes.
The hosts rallied, however, drawing level on the hour through Gerald Sibon before the prolific Dost netted what would prove to be the winner on 70 minutes.
Heerenveen move above Ajax, who can reclaim fourth place with victory over Utrecht on Saturday.
Roda remain ninth.
