A 3-0 win over AZ sent PSV four points clear at the top of the Eredivisie after Ajax could only draw 1-1 at Twente on Saturday.
The giants from Eindhoven and Amsterdam were expected to be given stern tests of their respective title credentials, but PSV were ultimately comfortable winners against AZ, with highly rated playmaker Adam Maher netting twice.
Luciano Narsingh opened the scoring in the 20th minute, with the Netherlands international winger scoring his third goal of the season in composed fashion when one-on-one.
Maher doubled their lead nine minutes later, tapping in from close range after goalkeeper Sergio Rochet could only flap at Jetro Willems’ left-wing cross.
And the former AZ youngster grabbed his second of the day just before the break, sending a precise finish into the bottom right corner at the end of a solo run to round off a dominant display.
Ajax looked in danger of falling five points behind PSV as they fell 1-0 down to Twente in the 17th minute, Jesus Corona cutting in from the right and placing a fine effort into the bottom-far corner.
But Kolbeinn Sigthorsson salvaged a draw 19 minutes from the end as he held his nerve to prod past Nick Marsman, ensuring Ajax end the weekend on 17 points while Twente’s unbeaten run was extended to 14 matches.
Vitesse’s steady climb up the table goes on thanks to a resounding 4-1 win at Willem II, building on the 6-1 hammering of ADO Den Haag in their previous league outing.
The Arnhem-based club lost three of their first four games of the season, but they are five unbeaten since, with the 1-1 draw at home to Heerenveen on September 20 their only minor blemish.
Feyenoord’s recent resurgence continued on Saturday as they beat visitors Heracles 2-1 thanks to a quick-fire double from Elvis Manu in the first half.
Fred Rutten’s men have now won three consecutive league games following a run of five without victory and they move up to sixth.
In the day’s other match, NAC Breda failed to vindicate the decision to part with coach Nebojsa Gudelj as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by 10-man Den Haag.
