AZ Alkmaar midfielder Maarten Martens has revealed that he could leave the club at the end of the season.
The Belgian international signed a new three-year deal at AFAS Stadion last summer, after rejecting an offer from CSKA Moscow.
“After the championship, I had a chance to embark on a new adventure,” Martens told Voetbal International.
“CSKA Moscow (interest) was concrete. I seriously considered it, but I felt good at Alkmaar and signed until mid 2014.”
The highly rated attacking midfielder missed the first part of the season through injury and he is now fully focused on building his fitness.
“I will now first make sure to stay fit and play in my favourite position. For the time being, I am perfectly happy at AZ.”
The player, however, doesn’t rule out a possibility of leaving the club in the near future.
“That does not mean that I don’t want to make the next step. So, (signing) a new contract doesn’t look likely.”
The 27-year-old came through the youth ranks at Anderlecht, but was never given a real opportunity in Brussels.
Martens spent next two season at RKC Waalwijk, where he attracted the attention of big Dutch clubs and subsequently moved to AZ Alkmaar.
The Belgian is currently playing his sixth season at AFAS Stadion, and has so far scored 30 goals in 131 Eredivisie games.
Martens is widely regarded as one of the best attacking midfielders in the league, but numerous injuries prevented him from realizing his full potential.
