VVV Venlo gave their Eredivise survival cause a boost following a 1-0 win over fellow relegation candidates Excelsior on Friday.

The hosts at the Seacon Stadion De Koel got off to a dream start when Japanese striker Robert Cullen netted in the opening 60 seconds, and that was all they required to cut the gap on 16th-placed Excelsior to six points.

Both VVV and Excelsior remain in relegation trouble and are nine and three points short of safety respectively having played 25 of 34 league matches.
