AZ Alkmaar moved back to the top of the Eredivisie after a 2-1 home win against a 10-man Feyenoord on Sunday.
AZ gave up the game’s opening goal when Ruben Schaken set up Otman Bakkal to give the visitors the lead after 36 minutes.
That meant that the hosts went into half-time behind, although Sweden’s Rasmus Elm pulled them level on the hour mark.
The referee had no other choice but to award the Alkmaar side a free kick after Stefan de Vrij fouled Adam Maher on the edge of the area and Elm curled his shot over the wall to make it 1-1.
Feyenoord defender Kelvin Leerdam was given a straight red card on 68 minutes and with the numerical advantage, AZ bagged a late winner as Australian Brett Holman scored with just five minutes to play.
FC Groningen won 3-2 at De Graafschap, with all five goals coming in the final 25 minutes in an amazing finish.
David Texeira put the visitors in front on 65 minutes, but a quick-fire double salvo from Yuri Rose and Vito Wormgoor had De Graafschap in the lead as the match headed for stoppage time.
But Texeira, a Uruguay Under-20 representative, netted his second goal one minute into stoppage time before Serbian Dusan Tadic had time to score a dramatic late winner for Groningen.
In other matches on Sunday, goals to Geoffrey Castillion and Ricky ten Voorde helped RKC Waalwijk to a 2-0 home win over NEC Breda, while Ivorian Wilfried Bony bagged a brace in Vitesse’s 2-0 win at bottom side Excelsior.
