FC Twente missed the chance to go top of the Eredivisie after battling to a 1-1 draw at ADO Den Haag on Saturday.

The draw moves Twente provisionally ahead of Ajax into second place on goal difference and a point behind leaders AZ Alkmaar, with both to play on Sunday.

Ebi Smolarek gave Den Haag the early advantage on six minutes, a lead they clung to for more than an hour before Glynor Plet’s equaliser for Twente.

Heerenveen cast aside their 5-1 defeat to PSV with a thumping 4-1 home win over VVV Venlo.

Viktor Elm scored twice for the home side as they moved up to fifth ahead of Feyenoord.

Roda JC were similarly impressive in a 3-1 win over Vitesse with first-half goals from Sanharib Malki and Davy de Beule helping them on their way.

In the other match played, Nourdin Boukhari scored the leveller for NAC Breda in the 77th minute against NEC Nijmegen before he was sent off in stoppage time.
