Reigning Dutch champions Twente missed a golden opportunity to go top of the Eredivisie when they lost 6-2 away to Heerenveen.
Oussama Assaidi scored a hat-trick for Heerenveen, who moved to seventh with the win, while Belgian winger Nacer Chadli scored both goals for Twente.
With the match delicately poised at 2-2 after an hour, Heerenveen took complete control in the final 30 minutes and goals to Viktor Elm, Luciano Narsingh, Mika Vayrynen and a third to Assaidi handed them a comfortable win.
Twente remain a point behind league leaders PSV Eindhoven who were held 0-0 at De Graafschapp on Saturday.
Elsewhere on Sunday, Ajax had their second straight win under new manager Frank De Boer with a 1-0 away win at Vitesse Arnhem following their 2-0 win over AC Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday.
A 10th-minute strike from Christian Eriksen was the difference as Ajax closed to within three points of PSV in fourth place.
Groningen remain third after their 2-0 home win over fifth-placed AZ Alkmaar.
Two goals from Slovenian striker Tim Matavz separated the sides in a spiteful affair that saw each team have a player sent off.
Finnish midfielder Tim Sparv was given his marching orders for the home side after 77 minutes, while Alkmaar defender Hector Moreno was dismissed just before the final whistle.
Feyenoord climbed to 13th place with a 1-0 win over Excelsior thanks to a 22nd minute goal from Luc Castaignos.
Excelsior remain on 15 points and are still in the relegation zone, two points from safety.
