Heracles thrashed Groningen 4-1 away from home, while Heerenveen continued their losing streak in the Eredivisie on Sunday.
The fifth-placed Groningen would have been expected to handle Heracles at their Euroborg home, and they took a predictable 12th-minute lead when Dusan Tadic fired the hosts ahead.
Swede Andreas Granqvist missed a chance from the penalty spot six minutes later to put his side two goals up – and little would they know it was a costly miss at the time.
Brazilian striker Everton turned the game on its head with a 42nd-minute equaliser, before providing the assist for Samuel Armenteros two minutes later to give the visitors a shock lead at the break.
The pair changed roles in the second half, when Armenteros teed up Everton to fire home his second goal in the 65th minute, before the Swede nabbed a brace himself with his second goal in the 89th minute to cap off a resounding victory.
Heerenveen lost their third league match in a row when they went down 1-0 to Feyenoord at home.
Luc Castaignos fired the winner for the visitors in the 78th minute.
FC Utrecht played out their sixth consecutive league draw when they fought back to snatch a 1-1 stalemate with Roda JC.
The visitors at Stadion Galgenwaard went ahead in the 32nd minute when Mads Junker netted a spot kick, before Leon de Kogel found an equaliser for the home side in the 82nd minute.
