Twente were held to a 1-1 draw at Roda JC as PSV Eindhoven and Vitesse Arnhem closed in on the Eredivisie leaders on Saturday.
Twente had won seven of their past eight league encounters and took the lead in the 68th minute through Luc Castaignos, who netted his fourth goal of the season.
But the advantage lasted just five minutes as Twente goalkeeper Nikolay Mihaylov missed Amin Affanes’ cross, allowing Guus Hupperts the easiest of finishes to equalise.
The result leaves Twente just one point clear of second-placed PSV, who scored three goals in 14 minutes to overcome Willem II Tilburg 3-2 at home.
Kevin Strootman’s brace and a goal from Tim Matavz with just eight minutes remaining proved the difference after Jens Podevijn and Niek Vossebelt had put Willem II in front in the opening half.
Vitesse Arnhem accounted for NAC Breda 3-0 away from home with Wilfried Bony scoring twice in the second half.
Vitesse are third with six wins and three draws, behind PSV, with seven wins and two losses, on goal difference.
Ajax Amsterdam remain fourth on 17 points following a thrilling 3-3 draw away to Heracles Almelo.
Ajax led 3-1 with just 10 minutes to go, though the home side remained undeterred, scoring two late goals to snatch a deserved point.
Elsewhere, Ryan Koolwijk scored twice as NEC Nijmegen overcame AZ Alkmaar 2-0 in Alkmaar.
