Eredivisie runners-up PSV Eindhoven started the new campaign with a 3-2 success away to Ado Den Haag on Saturday.

Dick Advocaat’s side scored all three of their goals in the first-half at the Kyocera Stadion, with the opener coming courtesy of Georginio Wijnaldum in the 12th minute. A Danny Holla own goal then doubled PSV’s advantage.

Jetro Willems added a third just after the half-hour mark as PSV threatened to run riot, but Holla scored at the right end on the stroke of half-time to give the home side hope of a comeback.

But despite their best efforts, they were unable to add to their tally until the 93rd minute when Mike van Duinen grabbed a late consolation.

Reigning champions Ajax brushed aside Roda JC 3-0 in the Eredivisie curtain-raiser on Friday, but it is Groningen who sit in first place after Saturday’s action as they earned an impressive 4-1 victory away to NEC at the Goffertstadion.

Tjaronn Chery and Andraz Kirm put the visitors 2-0 up within half-an-hour, but Navarone Foor’s strike just before the break gave the home side a way back into the match.

But they were unable to build on this momentum and David Texeira’s 54th-minute strike for the visitors effectively ended the game as a contest. Richairo Zivkovic’s goal in injury time completed the comprehensive victory for Groningen.

Heerenveen were 4-2 victors over AZ Alkmaar in an entertaining game at the Abe Lenstra Stadion.

Alfred Finnbogason notched a double including a penalty, while Pele van Anholt and Rajiv van La Parra were also on the score sheet for Marco van Basten’s men.

Those strikes were enough for victory, even though Mattias Johansson effort and Aron Johannsson were on target for AZ.

Elsewhere, FC Twente were held 0-0 by RKC Waalwijk at the De Grolsch Veste.
